ABSTRACT

Candidates for public office in the United States give Israel disproportionate and positive attention in their position papers and campaign rhetoric. Although the United States was the first country to recognize Israel, President Truman support for the creation of a Jewish state was not motivated by Israels strategic value to the United States nor he dissuaded by the argument that was a strategic liability. Pursuing the American policy will pose challenges for American ingenuity because of its perception that the Arabs require sophisticated arms for their own security and that the best interests of the United States to supply such arms, not least since these sales are important for the US economy. The United States secures the handshake between Rabin and Arafat and play the crucial role of sustaining the momentum of the process thereafter, despite numerous challenges to it. On the contrary, US-Israeli ties illustrate the overall value and reliability of American commitments, including those in the Arab world.
