ABSTRACT

The first appointments announced by the Prime Minister after the outbreak of war was that of Churchill to one of the commanding heights in the central direction of the war, the post of First Lord of the Admiralty, the post he had held in 191114. At the end of May 1941 Churchill agreed to be president of Chigwells War Weapons Week which had a target of 100,000. Churchill sent a message of good wishes for the success of the Week: Please convey to the Mayor and Corporation my best wishes for the success of the Boards efforts to raise the War Savings total from one-and-a-half to two million pounds. Churchill Tank Week was another fund raising effort to which the Prime Minister gladly gave his support. Churchill continued to bear the heavy burden of office despite recurring bouts of illness, one of which occurred over Christmas 1943. Hawkey sent a message of sympathy and good wishes.
