ABSTRACT

In the debate in the House on 5 October 1938 Churchill delivered a speech of considerable significance and impact. Churchil expressed his thoughts and views in the strongest possible terms. His speech was interrupted by a number of hecklers and by a scuffle when an objector was ejected by stewards. Churchill recalled that six years ago we had been safe and secure and the future was largely in the control of the great democracies of the West. Storm centre of local agitation against Mr Churchills opposition to the Prime Minister and the National Government, Chigwell Branch of the West Essex Unionist Association, this week caused a sensation in political circles by electing as chairman Mr Colin Thornton-Kemsley, most outspoken of Churchills critics inside or outside the constituency. Thornton-Kemsley is quoted as having admitted: It was made clear to me that the growing revolt in the Epping Division was welcomed in high places.
