ABSTRACT

In all households potential access to food in Rukwa Region is largely determined by the food they produce themselves (direct entitlement). The maize and beans they grow represent the most important source of food for consumption at household level. As Table 3 shows, three quarters of poor households and almost all the others grow these two staples for their own consumption. The level of potential production essentially depends, as stated above, on access to oxen and on available labour.
