ABSTRACT

A new, comprehensive food security policy needs to be formulated because of the persistent food insecurity in many countries of sub-Saharan Africa. A growing proportion of the urban and especially the rural population is hardly sure of having access to sufficient food now, let alone in the future. Theoretical reflections and empirical case studies that identify shortcomings in current conceptions are therefore needed if the development of appropriate conceptions for an increase in food security is to continue. They can provide valuable support in the reformulation of food security policies.
