ABSTRACT
Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898) was the foremost French mural painter of the late nineteenth century, whose works decorate many public buildings in France. His paintings were done on large canvases then fixed to walls (marouflage). He was well respected by many painters including Toulouse Lautrec and Seurat. He used simplified forms and non-naturalistic colours. The pale colours he used gave his murals the appearance of frescoes.
