ABSTRACT
The study protocol for training all therapists in the UK Alcohol Treatment Trial is described under the headings of selection, training, assessment and supervised practice with a rationale given for the method we used at each stage. The training approach can be adapted to various settings, intra agency and cross agency training needs. It has been further developed to be delivered as a thirty credit undergraduate module at the University of Leeds. Since the completion of UKATT, we have also delivered training to agencies where we have used the main components and ideas of SBNT in a ¯exible way in order to increase and promote family and network focused practice. An example of the latter work can be seen in Orford et al. (2009).
