ABSTRACT
The 1973 war revealed the strong links between Palestine and the Gulf for the fi rst time, uniting both against continued US support for Israel. It was a new and different position for the Gulf states, and was to become more visible throughout the remainder of the decade. The increasing visibility itself was a new departure; the region moved into centre stage of relations with the West until 1990, when the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait was to alter the situation.
