ABSTRACT

Discovery’s televisual culture consists of a number of components that all play a role to enable its televisual culture to operate in an increasingly global media landscape, and to steer between the global, regional, and national to create platforms at all levels for its factual television and new media output. This chapter shows how these operations and negotiations can be expressed in terms of the theoretical concepts of cultural homogenization, cultural hybridization, and cultural heterogenization. These concepts coexist in several dimensions and on different levels within Discovery’s globalizing televisual culture. This chapter explores the presence of these three dimensions within Discovery’s televisual culture in general, but focuses, in particular, on Discovery Channel.
