‘Death Over a Slow Fire'

We have seen how Huron and Montagnais women were able to exercise a great deal of power; how, although formally excluded from what has come to be called the ‘public’ sphere, they were not dominated by men who occupied public positions. We have also seen that women held important positions within the productive process and how the introduction of commodity exchange with Europeans in itself did not undermine their status even though women did not participate directly in the trade.
