ABSTRACT

Long-time Miami Herald reporter and writer Fred Tasker was given the assignment to write a Labor Day Weekend 2008 feature that would run on the front page of his newspaper. It was at the peak of South Florida’s hurricane season and two of the storms were moving in the Caribbean. He decided to write about the contrast of Labor Day Weekend in the tropical South Florida area to the rest of the country. Here is how he began the story:

Poet T.S. Eliot called April the cruelest month. He never spent a September in South Floridaespecially a Labor Day weekend.
