ABSTRACT
Formal groups are either functional groups within an organization or task groups.4 Functional groups are clusters of people formed by the organization’s design, such as divisions, departments, sections, and work units. They are a product of the organization’s division of labor, the way the organization has divided its total work to reach its goals. Such groups are often permanent, but can change if the organization redesigns its structure.
