ABSTRACT

Boundaries can present barriers; or they can provide opportunities. In collaborative working in higher education, practice is often situated at the forefront of knowledge development, with collaborations pushing at the limits of cognition. Boundaries can be found in all areas of academic work, whether they be constructed around discipline, technology or geography; but breaking through boundaries can provide creative spaces for innovative practice and for collaborative working beyond the academy. And if we look beyond the confines of our own university, working with partners based in other educational sectors, the wider community, industry or internationally, then we can potentially gain impetus and new insights. Boundaries are encountered and crossed in all collaborations. In this chapter we look at four case studies where the experiences of the authors illuminate three examples of such crossings: of sector, institution and discipline.
