ABSTRACT
In 1972 Parliament passed the European Communities Act which took effect on 1 January 1973. Since then Britain's entry into what was then called the European Community (or the Common Market) has propelled it into a new legal, economic and political dimension which has gained momentum as the years progress. The full extent and the exact nature of the final outcome is uncertain and open to considerable speculation.
