ABSTRACT

SIX weeks later war broke out in Europe. As was inevitable after twenty years of strong and well-organized German propaganda in the Middle East, Turkey joined Germany against the Allies. Through the slats of her window, barred in harem fashion, Sarah watched with sinking heart the “Conquerors of Egypt”, the soldiers of Djemal Pasha’s Fourth Army, marching past. She saw this raggle-taggle army as a horde of locusts about to descend on Palestine, for she knew that Zichron and the other settlements would be stripped bare by their pitiless demands.
