ABSTRACT

When Freud (1908, 1910) addressed the question of artistic creation, he used a method that had yielded rich rewards in the investigation of dreams and neurotic symptoms. The method involved analysing the content of a psychic product in order to uncover its unconscious sources, and in this way he had shown, for example, that the manifest content of a dream was merely a pointer to the unconscious nexus of wishes (the dream's latent content) from which it had arisen, wishes that the dreamer was unable to acknowledge (Freud 1900).
