ABSTRACT
The treatment of donkey sentences has been the center of much debate since the topic was introduced to linguists in the early 1980s. Central to this debate is the question of the status of the pronouns and the indefi nite NPs with which they are related in a sentence like (1):
(1) If a man owns a donkey, he beats it.
