ABSTRACT
A hundred thousand years ago humans were communicating with spoken language, but true writing only began sometime within the last 10,000 years. Nearly everyone acquires speech and listening because people interact with each other in social networks. However, not everyone becomes literate because literacy usually requires that people receive some specific instruction in a culturally dependent writing system. Thus, while language itself is a universal characteristic of humans, reading and writing are less uniformly acquired.
