ABSTRACT

Too much ‘reflective practice’ has been described as if it were a psychological, lonely affair, thinking about what the individual apprehends in the outside world. I call this extreme ‘reflective practice as individual incident analysis’ (RPIIA). Fortunately there are alternatives, which suggest reflective activities with an interpersonal group dynamic, whilst advocating, protecting and encouraging concepts of personal growth, and even development, of an inner-life quest. This chapter outlines later an example of such a group reflective encounter which delivered some practical and unexpected outcomes. But before we can get to this, I will describe some of the ruts that can bog down ‘reflective practice’, as well as some more liberating concepts, to try to explain the context for doing this work.
