ABSTRACT
The series of ruptures which characterize the recent political history of Portugal has profoundly marked the development of social security in this country, both on the concrete level of administrative structures and benefit schemes, and on the level of the discourse describing and interpreting the existing system. This article summarizes these developments and assesses their consequences for contemporary social security policies.
