ABSTRACT

During lunchtime, you are often dealing with large numbers of children who have been inside for several hours and have lots of energy. The concept of danger seems alien to many, and you are required to stop them doing things they desperately want to do. It is not surprising that, when attempting to keep children physically safe, you can sometimes feel like a ‘moaning Minnie’. This chapter will explore measures you and your school can take to keep children safe at

lunchtime in the playground and inside the school building. Your legal responsibilities will be outlined, as well as your role when assessing and managing risk, coping with accidents, administering first aid, recording incidents and dealing with pupils’ special needs.
