The Russian Orthodox Church in a Changing Society

Of all the foundations of the old way of life swept away by the Russian Revolution, only the Russian Orthodox church was preserved as a social institution. However, while the church had been one of the bulwarks of the tsarist regime and organically tied to the monarchy, in the Soviet state it was subjected to persecution and oppression within a society which was anti-religious and militantly atheist. ¹
