ABSTRACT

Film and ways of seeing the world All films may be said to attempt to re-present what we might call the ‘out-there’ world or the world as it exists. In doing this they present to the audience a specific and particular way of seeing that world. Therefore, in reading films of all types we should consider the ways in which such concepts as class, gender, race, sexuality, and national, regional, cultural and religious identities are being addressed. With one eye on the so-called ‘war on terror’ and our experience of living with its consequences, we might also note that during any period of potential political intolerance ways of seeing the world become especially contentious.
