ABSTRACT

Data collection comes from two years of participant/observation on 67 heterosexual and one homosexual member of Sig Ep (a national fraternity) located at a university which maintains a population of 19,000 undergraduate students. Of these students, 53 percent are Asian, 31 percent are white, and 12 percent are Latino. There are 31 fraternities on this campus, all with men raging between the ages of 18 and 23. Because of the costs associated with fraternity membership, most come from middle-to upperclass backgrounds, making a class analysis diffi cult. Furthermore, this research only provides an in-depth analysis of Sig Ep, at this particularly university, so generalizations cannot be made for other chapters of this, or other fraternal orders.
