ABSTRACT

Since 1980 sf film has taken hold of the cinematic imaginary. Key to New Hollywood synergistic practices, sf films often herald the “event” season, and according to the Internet Movie Database 30 percent of the All-Time Worldwide Box Office Top 100 are post-1980 sf films, a number of which are theme-park/game/film franchises. Able to offer seductive visions of the future and an affecting, spectacular sense of apocalypse, and to engage with the most important political and social issues of the day, sf film affects us in our bodies and makes sense of major social events and catastrophes.
