ABSTRACT

The prices of energy used to pump groundwater may influence the amount of groundwater abstracted, obviating the need for water meters at wells. It is far easier to monitor and enforce indirect charges on energy than direct charges for groundwater abstraction. The influence of higher energy prices depends on the depth of the water level and the economic value of the water in a particular use. The deeper the level and the lower the economic value, the greater will be the impact of higher energy prices.
