ABSTRACT
As agricultural commodity prices, which are influenced by national agricultural policies and trade regimes, have a major impact on the profitability of irrigated agriculture, they influence the level of groundwater abstraction for irrigation. Martin concludes after reviewing his experience of forecasting irrigated acreage in Arizona: “Agricultural commodity demand will have the greatest effect on the economic scarcity of water of any one variable.” (See Martin 1986, 1153)
