Th e “Initial Field Experience in Social Studies Education” is the introductory course for the secondary social studies education program at the University of Georgia. Students complete a 60-hour fi eld experience in a middle or high school and attend a 2-hour seminar once per week across the 15-week semester. Th rough the fi eld experience and coursework, students examine the nature, purpose, and practices of social studies in schools. In this chapter, I describe my approach to this course.
