ABSTRACT

As part of my undergraduate secondary social studies methods courses I require groups of four to fi ve students to complete a unit plan that involves using the university’s archives. I have several major goals for my preservice teachers: (1) to introduce them to the plethora of resources university archives have to off er for developing original lesson plans; (2) to help them understand how to use and edit archival resources for pedagogical purposes; (3) to locate archival resources that will enable their future students to make meaningful connections between their own lives and historical events; (4) to use archival resources to help students make connections between local and global events; (5) to help them develop the collaborative skills they will need to work with future colleagues.
