ABSTRACT

After an extensive review of the communication literature, Rubin and Martin (1994) identified 10 dimensions of competence: self-disclosure (sharing information with others that otherwise would not be known), empathy (feeling with another person), social relaxation (comfort and ease with self and others), assertiveness (asserting one’s own rights while respecting the rights of others), interaction management (navigating conversations effectively and appropriately), altercentrism (willingness to be responsive to others), expressiveness (expressing thoughts and feelings), supportiveness (confirming communication), immediacy (emotional and physical availability), and environmental control (managing communication effectively).
