ABSTRACT

I am delighted to be able to report that since the publication of the first edition of this text, considerable outcome research has been done in the areas of couples therapy, group therapy, and, to a lesser extent, couples group therapy. It is important as scientist-practitioners that we be aware of scientific advances in our field, especially inasmuch as they inform clinical practice. In addition, it is important to be able to inform clients with confidence of key findings from research about the effectiveness of the treatment that they may receive. This shared knowledge is key in the spirit of ethical informed consent. With help from Dr. Seth Gillihan of the University of Pennsylvania, this chapter reviews each of these areas of the literature and goes on to report our own work in evidence-based practice on the couples groups at the Coché Center.
