ABSTRACT

Against the background of the pioneering work of those who have contributed towards the defi nition of the fi eld of ecological security (cf. Falk 1971; Mische 1997 and 2006; Kvaløy Setreng 1973 and 2001; NCLIE 2005; Verhagen 2006), this chapter purports to take stock of the educational task of developing solidarity with nature as part of global citizenship. I use the concept of ‘universalism,’ which means that this would require of the world’s peoples to search for a vision of commonality. It is imperative that this unity is embedded in a philosophy of confl ict transformation supporting a dynamic-neither stagnant nor monolithic-universalism. I argue in this chapter that this dynamism needs an educational approach.
