ABSTRACT

In 1984, the China-Europe Management Programme (CEMP) started in Beijing. It was a partnership between the European Community and the State Economic Commission (SEC), a ministry of the Chinese government. The focus of the CEMP was an MBA programme commencing in September 1984. It was the first MBA programme in China. In 1989, the CEMP expanded into the ChinaEurope Management Institute (CEMI), which initiated executive programmes and original research into China’s economic reform. In 1994, CEMI changed its Chinese partner and moved to Shanghai to become the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS). By that time, it had graduated 248 MBA students and some 600 executives had attended its management development programmes.
