ABSTRACT

Accordingly, the identication of one person as the problem for insurance claims while providing services with the focus on the overall family units’ problem raises an ethical question of whether couple and family therapists are misrepresenting diagnoses to third-party nanciers. Gladding, Remley, and Huber (2001) suggested that some family therapists may not see misinterpretation as a cause of ethical concern. However, others may not view it as deceptive, or what Packer (1988) called “insurance diagnosis” (p. 19). In addition, labeling one person as the identied patient may have lifelong ramications for that individual.
