ABSTRACT

Beyond the ‘adverse effects’ of GM crops being evaluated in EU regulatory procedures in the late 1990s, an extra issue emerged-the prospect that GM material would become inadvertently mixed with non-GM products (see Chapter 6). The stakes were raised by new rules which required a ‘GM’ label for any product containing more than 0.9% of GM material (see Chapter 7). Such a label could reduce the market value of a crop, especially if intended for food uses.
