ABSTRACT

This chapter is about ‘what works’ in programs that seek to change gendered norms at the level of households and communities that lead to increased equity for women and girls, with a focus on low-to middleincome countries. There are clear rationales for doing so. One is the body of work developed by the Commission on the Social Determinants of Health (CSDH) (WHO, 2005, 2008) for which gender equity was a key priority for action. This volume as well as the fi nal report of the CSDH (CSDH, 2008) attests to the priority placed on increasing equity for women and girls by the CSDH.
