ABSTRACT

Now we can see what comprises the narrative condensation. Bath speaks one language, the narrator another. Bath's is the language of the female subject who prepares for the future, for the next phase of her life. The narrator is concerned with virginity in the now common sense, which is not oriented towards the future but to the past, not a beginning but an end, not positive but negative. What can the importance be of this negative, male view of the woman in transition?
