ABSTRACT

A heightened awareness exists among Latin American executives of the fact that human resource practices are related to business performance, but the question remains as to which practices matter and how they interact to improve a company’s competitive position. How can management simultaneously achieve its financial goals and satisfy the needs of its employees? Which management styles are most effective at ensuring these results? Executives and academics looking for answers to these questions might look to the Grupo San Nicolás, a small pharmaceutical company in El Salvador that was named “Best Employer in Central America” in 2005 and “Best Medium-Size Employer in Latin America” in 2006 (AméricaEconomía, 2005, 2006).
