As we saw earlier, even trying to decide if something is a fact or an opinion can be

complicated. I think what’s important is that you look carefully to try and work out what the writer is up to. Writers (or speakers) usually have reasons behind the

language they use. Another word for reasons is ‘purposes’. You should always ask

‘What is the purpose behind this language’? Thinking about that will help you to

understand two other important ideas – audience and style.
