ABSTRACT

Family members and carers are eager to have as much information as possible in order to help their loved one get over their illness and, although highly motivated, they are all too often excluded from helping by adult services. This is either because the person with an eating disorder is not ready to change and so has not yet engaged in treatment or because health professionals are reluctant to include the families and carers of adults in treatment. As discussed in Chapter 4, an issue that causes confusion among professionals is that of confidentiality. A solution that we have developed to overcome some of these problems is to run workshops for people who care for someone with an eating disorder. We have included all types of carer (parents, partners and siblings), for all forms of eating disorder (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa), at all stages of the illness and with all levels of severity.
