ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to identify a framework of international human rights law as a reference point for the discussion in the remainder of the book. The aim is not to provide a historical account of the development of human rights law, nor a comprehensive statement of the current law, but merely to highlight a number of key principles that are necessary to inform the substantive analysis of the selected international economic actors in subsequent chapters. The source and character of human rights obligations and their application to non-State, international economic actors are particularly important elements of that framework.
