ABSTRACT

Thinking about ICT thIs chapter provIdes a range of practical examples of the use of ICT to support the teaching of English, after some discussion of its general impact on the subject and on education more widely. As with other topics in this book, devoting a separate chapter to ICT emphasises its importance but runs the risk of implying that it should be treated as a discrete area rather than integrated into other aspects of English. Presenting the book as one continuous text that does not follow a simply linear pattern but instead allows the reader to move from one topic to another as these arise in context could solve this difficulty. Of course, this is precisely the facility afforded by computer technology with its system of hyperlinks. Another challenge when writing about ICT is that, even more than other aspects of English, the subject matter can become out-of-date as technology develops. The answer would be to have the facility to update and edit text on a regular basis. Again, this is precisely the facility afforded by web-based publications.
