Writing free verse This simple technique helps to introduce pupils to free verse (see more at Module 3). As Doris Corti asserts in Writing Poetry, free verse is not merely prose split up into shorter lines. True enough, it has broken away from strict metre and regular
rhyme, but the lines of a free verse poem are full of subtle emphases, rhythmical
patterns and resonances of sound that can create a beautiful smoothness, a silky
flow that carries the listener on.
