ABSTRACT

In the way that I’m using the idea, a story arc is linked to the notion of a sub-plot. This is a kind of story-inside-a-story. It can happen when characters split up for some

reason, in which case the adventures of each of them would form a different sub-

plot within the main story. All of these arcs would then loop back into the main

story (perhaps not all at the same point) – Figure 28b. Story arcs are often used not

only in books but in comic series and in TV series too – the very popular Doctor Who for example uses story arcs a lot, where we meet a minor character in one story

who then becomes a key character in another story.
