Your obligations as a writer Near the start of this Countdown you read about a Writer’s Rights (Module 57). But
you know that with rights come responsibilities. I’m using that word to mean ‘duties
and obligations’; things you must do out of a sense of honour and pride and respect
– not just because someone has told you to do them. Different people may have
other ideas about a writer’s obligations, but this is what I think:
Your first duty is to yourself, to do the best you can in your writing. That’s about
self-respect, which I think is vital before you can truly and fully respect other people.
