ABSTRACT
The Association of Charitable Foundations adds a fi fth category refl ecting the recent growth in such foundations. Community foundations are charitable trusts that support local community causes. Their role is to manage donor funds and build endowments as well as make grants to charities and community groups. They play an important role in linking local donors with local needs and their number has doubled since 2001 (Association of Charitable Foundations 2007).
