ABSTRACT

In this chapter we consider a number of the key issues associated with the management of successful fundraising teams. While much of the content here falls in the domains of either human resource management or organizational behaviour, our goal in this chapter is to provide an overview of the most signifi cant of these issues and to set them fi rmly in the context of fundraising. The principles underpinning good management practice are shared across all sectors, whether organizations are ‘for-profi t’ or ‘not-for-profi t’ but there are a number of nuances to take account of when working in the voluntary sector context. Best practice in relation to the management of volunteers, for example, does have a lot in common with the management of employees, but there are also signifi cant differences that a voluntary sector manager needs to be aware of. The motivation of volunteers can be very different from that of employees and organizations may have to use a variety of different channels to communicate the need to individuals who might be interested in supporting them in this way.
