ABSTRACT

The dependence of nicotine is classified as a psychiatric disorder in ICD-10 and DSMIV. Nicotine-dependence defining features include failed attempts to abstain, powerful urges to use nicotine and withdrawal symptoms on cessation. The World Health Organization (2008) report on status of global efforts against tobacco indicates that only 5% of the global population is protected by comprehensive national smoke-free legislation; 40% of countries still allow smoking in hospitals and schools; and services to treat tobacco dependence are fully available in only nine countries, covering 5% of the world’s people.
