ABSTRACT

So far we have looked at the business and context of magazines. Now it is time to turn to the actual production of a magazine, beginning with its written content. Subsequent chapters will consider the role of art and design in the production process. Here we shall focus on the typical structure of an editorial department, as well as some of the essential elements for creating good content based around preparation, commissioning and checking/subbing material. Some other features, particularly with regard to ethical and legal factors that have to be considered by editors, are considered in Chapter 7.
