ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Deborah Shelley's memories about Valentine's Day in her childhood days. It explores that every year on Valentine's Day her father would come home with red heart-shaped boxes of chocolates-a large box for my mother and a small one for her. Radio broadcasts describe romantic evenings at special restaurants, TV commercials show radiant women receiving diamonds from their sweethearts, and stores abound with valentine treasures of every kind. The chapter explores that she came across the numerous Internet postings by individuals who expressed their opinions and experiences regarding Valentine's Day. The origins of this day are steeped in mystery, with roots in both Christian and Pagan traditions. It proceeds that Christmas might be the only holiday celebration that exceeds Valentine's Day, but Christmas is based on a religion that is still honored and practiced today and is sanctioned by the US government as a national holiday.
